Oblique-Rack Egg Beater: One Rack Turns Two Beaters Opposite Ways

Two beaters turning opposite ways had needed a bevel wheel and two pinions. Sylvenus Walker of Boston received US 26,958, dated 24 January 1860, for an egg beater with a rack piece whose two sides are at different heights, one matching an upper pinion and the other a lower pinion; held in the left hand and vibrated back and forth with the right, it turns two pear-shaped beaters, one within the other, "in opposite directions." This rung works out the turns per stroke, then prints the rack frame and pinions, bends the two beaters, and times a beating.

The embedded blueprint pumps a rack against one pinion. Walker gives the rack two sides at two heights for two pinions.

Read US 26,958

"It is not contended that the use of two pear shaped egg beaters one within the other is a patentable novelty, nor the vibrating of egg beaters by means of a rack and pinions as these devices have been already used; but the arranging of the two sides of the rack piece at different elevations, one of which corresponds to the height of the upper pinion (e'), and the other to that of the lower pinion (d'), presents a feature not hitherto found in any such apparatus."

Print the rack and pinions

Print the rack frame (/uploads/blueprints/oblique-rack-egg-beater-rack.stl) and two 10-tooth pinions (/uploads/blueprints/oblique-rack-egg-beater-pinion.stl). Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls.

Arbor and sleeve

Epoxy the lower pinion to a 5 mm rod. Epoxy the upper pinion to a length of silicone tube sleeved over the rod above it, so each turns on its own.

History and honest limits

**Sylvenus Walker** of Boston, assignor to William P. Spence, received US 26,958, dated 24 January 1860. With the beaters vertical, one side of the rack is higher than the other by the pinion's thickness, so the frame stands oblique to the horizon; he called that an important feature. He claimed the oblique rack and pinions in combination. **Honest limits.** FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. A level frame with one side raised stands in for his oblique one, and a silicone sleeve for his hollow shaft. Your times are the result.
