Sat Kradot (Jumping Animal, Sat Chak) — a Slotted Pai Ruak Bamboo Tube and a Pull Stick 8-10 cm Longer, the Front Legs Pinned to the Pull Stick and the Back Legs to the Tube; Pull In and Out and the Animal Runs and Leaps

สัตว์กระโดด (sat kradot, jumping animal; also sat chak, pulled animal) is a toy carved in the shape of various animals, with a mechanism that makes it move. Hold the tube and pull the stick in and out, and the animal looks as if it is running or jumping. This blueprint makes a real sat kradot following the steps in the source.

Tube and pull stick

Cut one internode of pai ruak bamboo and cut off one end. Cut slots on both sides, equal in width and length, from the node end to the middle of the tube, for the front legs. Drill a hole 1 cm beyond the slot, towards the top, through both sides, to fix the back legs. Shave a flat pull stick 8-10 cm longer than the tube, one end slightly larger than the hand end, and drill a hole about 2 cm from that end.

Animal and legs

Prepare a block of wood and carve it into an animal, sand it, and drill holes for the ears, horns and tail; drill the front- and back-leg holes right through. Shave 4 legs, drill top and bottom holes equally in all 4, and shave 4 wooden pins.

Assemble

Push a pin through one leg, the body and the other leg, and cap the pin with a bamboo stopper; do this for the front and back legs. Put the pull stick in the tube; pass the front-leg pin through the slot into the hole at the end of the pull stick and on into the other leg, and cap it. Do the same for the back legs, but thread the pin through the hole drilled beyond the slot instead.
