Sloyd Carving Knife Forged from Tool Steel

The sloyd knife is the short, stiff carving knife of Scandinavian woodwork; Swedish educational sloyd began with the knife. Forge a blade of 7 to 9 cm with a slightly curved edge and a tang, grind wide flat bevels, harden and temper it, and fit a plain hardwood handle. Forge the blade

Draw tool-steel bar out to a blade about 7–9 cm long, curve the edge side slightly toward the point, and draw a narrow tang about as long as the handle.

File the bevels

Anneal in the ashes, then file a wide flat bevel on each side down toward the edge, leaving it a little thick for hardening.

Harden and temper

Heat to cherry red and quench in water. Polish bright, warm the spine and quench when the edge shows dark straw.

Handle

Saw and shape a hardwood handle to fit your hand, drill it for the tang, heat the tang and burn it in, then glue or peen it fast. Oil the handle.

Sharpen

Hone each bevel flat on the stone until it meets the edge, then strop off the burr.
