Sodium Hydroxide 10 % Solution: Lye Weighed into Water

Many recipes call for caustic soda as a 10 % solution, not as solid lye: for scouring and mercerising cotton, soapmaking, cleaning metal before anodising. It is 100 g of sodium hydroxide in every 1,000 g of solution. Dissolving it gives off a lot of heat, so the lye goes into cold water slowly.

Instructions

1

Weigh

For 1 kg of solution weigh 100 g of solid lye and 900 g of cold water (see the notebook for other amounts).

Lye into water, slowly

Add the lye to the water a little at a time, stirring, never water onto lye. It heats up strongly and can spit: goggles and gloves on.

3

Cool and bottle

Let it cool to room temperature and pour it into a labelled plastic bottle with a tight cap: lye slowly etches glass and takes up carbon dioxide from the air.
