Sodium Hydroxide Solution: Normal Caustic Soda, 40 g per Litre (Sutton, 1904)

The standard normal (1 M) caustic soda solution for titration: 40 g NaOH in each litre. Make it a little too strong, check it against normal acid, bring it to exact strength and keep it away from the air, which it takes carbon dioxide from. Result: normal sodium hydroxide solution, its strength proved by titration. Source: F. Sutton, A Systematic Handbook of Volumetric Analysis (1904), p. 48. Picture: that page of the book.

Instructions

1

Dissolve the caustic soda

Dissolve pure caustic soda in distilled water until the solution has a specific gravity of about 1.05, about 50 g to the litre: a little stronger than normal (40 g to the litre). Expose it to the air as little as possible.

Materials for this step:

Sodium Hydroxide - Lab GradeSodium Hydroxide - Lab Grade1 about 50 g per litre
Distilled WaterDistilled Water1 solvent

2

Titrate and adjust

Estimate its strength roughly with normal acid and methyl orange. Then titrate 50 ml of it exactly against normal acid and adjust it to exact normal strength. Methyl orange works cold even if the solution has taken up some carbon dioxide; with litmus or phenolphthalein, titrate boiling. Not given: the dilution, implied by the adjustment. Ours: hydrochloric acid as the normal acid; methyl orange as the pH indicator solution.

Store it

Once its strength is settled, keep it in a bottle that shuts out the air, or in full bottles with their glass stoppers lightly greased with vaseline.
