Strontium Ferrite Disc Magnet: 0.4 mol SrCO3 to 3.6 mol Iron Oxide, 1270 °C (Went, Philips 1956, Ex. 14)

A ceramic magnet with strontium in place of barium: 0.4 mol strontium carbonate to 3.6 mol iron oxide, milled 15 hours and passed through a 1270 °C furnace in 20 minutes. Went's rod held 1,290 gauss with a coercive force of 3,080 oersted. Source: J. J. Went, G. W. van Oosterhout and E. W. Gorter (Philips), US 2,762,777 (1956), Example 14. They sintered rods; discs and the magnetising are ours. Picture: ferrite magnets, Omegatron, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0.

Instructions

1

Weigh strontium carbonate and iron oxide

Weigh 59.1 g strontium carbonate (0.4 mol) and 580.0 g ferric oxide (3.6 mol).

Materials for this step:

Strontium CarbonateStrontium Carbonate59.1 g
Ferric OxideFerric Oxide580 g

Tools needed:

Balance ScaleBalance Scale
P100 RespiratorP100 Respirator
2

Mill with alcohol 15 hours and dry

Grind with alcohol in a ball mill for 15 hours and dry.

Tools needed:

Iron Ball MillIron Ball Mill
Ethanol - Lab Grade, 95%Ethanol - Lab Grade, 95%
Drying OvenDrying Oven
3

Form the pieces and dry overnight

The patent extrudes rods; ours: press discs at 1.5 tonnes per cm², as in its other examples. Dry overnight.

Hydraulic PressHydraulic Press
Disc Pressing DieDisc Pressing Die
Drying OvenDrying Oven
4

Pass through a 1270 °C zone in 20 minutes

Sinter in air at 1270 °C by passing the pieces through a 10 cm hot zone at 5 mm per minute: 20 minutes in the heat.

Tools needed:

Tube FurnaceTube Furnace
Heat-Resistant GlovesHeat-Resistant Gloves
5

Magnetise the discs

The patent gives no magnetising method. Ours: lay a disc with its faces against the poles of a strong electromagnet, switch the current on, then off. Find which face is north with a compass.
