Tannic Acid: Powdered Galls Extracted with Ether and Alcohol (75:25)
Pelouze's way of getting tannic acid from galls uses ether; Thorpe's Dictionary (1913) notes that a mixture of 75 % ether and 25 % alcohol can be used in its place. The extract separates into two layers, and the lower one, a strong tannic acid solution, dries to a porous mass. No amounts are given. Ether is very flammable: no flame, fume hood.

Extract with 75 % ether, 25 % alcohol
Mix 75 parts commercial ether with 25 parts alcohol and extract the powder with it. Ours: shake in a stoppered bottle in a fume hood, away from any flame.
Tools needed:
Diethyl Ether
Ethanol - Lab Grade, 95%
Graduated Cylinder
Glass Bottles with Stoppers
Fume Hood (Ducted)
Chemical Splash Goggles

Keep the lower layer and evaporate it
The extract separates into two layers: gallic acid, wax and resins in the upper, a strong tannic acid solution in the lower. Evaporate the lower layer to a porous mass. Ours: separatory funnel, evaporating dish on a water bath.
