The Revolving Table-Basket: Turn the Dish on Its Stem, With a Handle to Lift It Level

A basket of bread, cake, fruit or nuts has to be lifted and turned to reach what is on its far side, and one carried by a swinging bail tips when unevenly loaded. John Gibson, Jr., of Albany, New York, received US 119,086, dated 19 September 1871, for mounting "a table-basket or dish for bread, cake, fruit, nuts, preserves, &c., on caster-wheels or other wheels, to facilitate the movement of the basket or dish on a table or other surface", pivoting it to its base to revolve round a central handle-stem, and providing receptacles for nut-picks, knives, spoons and plates. The upright central handle lifts the basket level from any side. This rung works out how little push turns the loaded basket, then makes it from a bowl on a turntable bearing with a central handle and pick holders, on small casters, and serves fruit and nuts from it.

The pivot it turns on

The embedded blueprint makes a plain bearing. Gibson's basket turns on a central stem, a pivot of the same kind, like a table-caster.

Read US 119,086

"The basket or dish B is supported by the base A and pivoted to the same, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, where the said basket or dish is revolved round a central handle-stem C, somewhat in the manner of a table-caster, and, being thus pivoted, any side of said basket or dish may be readily reached by revolving the same, and would thus readily present for selection any article from a variety which may be contained therein" "By this part of my invention the instruments or other articles, as in Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 6, necessary to be used when eating of the articles served from the said table-basket or dish B, can be presented at the same time in convenient readiness and position for distribution and use"

Make the basket and serve from it

**Base.** Cut a hardwood disc for the base and screw three small casters under it as the wheels a. **Pivot and stem.** Screw a lazy-susan turntable bearing to the base's top. Drill a hardwood dowel handle-stem into the base's centre through the bearing, and fix a ring or knob on its top as the handle c. **Basket.** Screw a wooden bowl, drilled in the middle for the stem, onto the turntable so it turns round the stem. **Holders.** Drill a ring of holes in a small wooden collar on the stem above the bowl for nut-picks and knives, as Gibson's receptacles e. **Test.** Load the bowl with fruit and nuts, put nut-picks in the collar, and turn the bowl with one finger, reading the push with the spring scale. Lift the basket by its handle with the load on one side.

History and honest limits

**John Gibson, Jr.,** of Albany, New York, received US 119,086, dated 19 September 1871. The base could be dispensed with and the wheels fixed directly to the basket; receptacles e for nut-picks and knives were placed round the stem, and receptacles e′ for plates at the base. He did not confine himself to any form of base, basket or handle, or to any manner of pivoting. **Honest limits.** A wooden bowl on a bought turntable bearing stands in for his made basket and pivot. The notebook uses a simple friction torque; its loads, sizes and friction are examples. Your push is the result.
