Tinplate and Galvanized Steel Sheet from Coil

Thin steel rusts, so most sheet is coated in continuous lines that run a coil through at speed. Tinplate, the material of food cans, is cold-reduced steel strip about 0.15–0.55 mm thick electroplated with a thin layer of tin, around 1–11 g per square metre; the strip is then heated just past tin's melting point so the coating flows bright, and passivated and oiled. Galvanized sheet is strip run through a bath of molten zinc, the same coating as batch galvanizing done continuously; excess zinc is wiped off as the strip rises, setting the coating thickness.

Instructions

1

Clean the strip

The cold-rolled coil is uncoiled into a moving strip and cleaned so the coating will bond.

2

Tinplate: electroplate

The strip runs through plating cells that deposit a thin, controlled weight of tin on both sides: 1.1–11.2 g per square metre. Here 2.8 g a side on 0.2 mm strip, about 3.6 kg of tin per tonne.

3

Tinplate: reflow

The strip is heated just past tin's melting point so the matt coating flows bright, then quenched.

4

Galvanized: zinc bath

The strip dips through molten zinc and rises out; excess zinc is wiped off to set the coating. Here Z275, 275 g per square metre counting both sides, on 1 mm strip: about 35 kg of zinc per tonne.

Finish and recoil

Tinplate is passivated and lightly oiled; the coated strip is recoiled or cut into sheets.
