Trigger Spray Bottle: Tyler, 1962

Tracy B. Tyler of Miami Beach patented this hand sprayer in 1962, US 3,061,202. Pulling a long trigger drives a cup-shaped piston into a cylinder in the plastic body, pushing liquid out through a spring-loaded outlet valve and a nozzle. A spring returns the piston, drawing liquid up a suction tube through a strainer and an intake valve. Turning the nozzle changes the jet from a mist to a plain stream: a misting element whirls the liquid through tangential slots, or the nozzle is backed off so the liquid comes out straight. A slow, timid pull lets liquid bypass back to the container instead of dribbling out. Most parts are moulded of plastic, and the intake stem is joined to the body by spin welding: spun at high speed in its tapered seat until friction melts and fuses the surfaces.

Instructions

1

Mould the parts

Mould the body, with its cylinder bore, spring guide, intake port and outlet conduit, and the trigger, nozzle, cap and stem, in an insoluble plastic. Make the piston washer, screen-retaining bushing, suction tube, sealing ring and outlet valve from a flexible, yielding plastic.

Valves and stem

Place the intake valve, its seat and suspension spring, and the strainer screen in the stem, then spin the stem at high speed in the body's tapered seat until frictional heat melts and fuses the two into one piece.

Piston and trigger

Fit the cup piston and washer with the reaction spring in the cylinder. Pivot the trigger on a rod between side panels of the body, with its crotch engaging the piston and a stop shoulder limiting its stroke.

Nozzle and bottle

Fit the outlet valve and its closing spring, the misting element and the nozzle on the nose bushing, and screw the cap with its suction tube onto the bottle.
