Wot (Bamboo Panpipe) — 5-8 Small Bamboo Tubes of Uneven Length, Each Closed at One Node with a Rounded Mouth, Set Round a Larger Core Tube in Lac; Blown, or Whirled on a String Until It Hoots

โหวด (wot; also wut, bok yong) is a folk toy made of several small bamboo tubes bound together with lac. It is sounded by blowing across the tube mouths, or by tying on a string and whirling it round. It developed from horns blown to call animals. This blueprint makes a real wot following the source.

Bamboo pipes, before it

The pi siang nok is a single pipe with a slide; the wot bundles many tubes of different lengths for many notes.

Read from the source

"Some trim the tube openings to leave them about half open, which gives a small, high, sweet sound." (Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, author not named, CC BY 4.0)

Sounding tubes

Choose small bamboo and cut it into pieces of uneven length, mostly 5-8 pieces. Cut off the node at one end and keep the node at the other. Pare the blowing edge round with a knife.

Pack with lac

Melt lac over a fire; when it is soft and starting to cool, pack it round the tubes to bind them together, with the openings at the side, on the same side as the lac. Trim some openings to about half open for a small, high, sweet sound.

How to play

Hold the wot and blow across the tube openings together; the many tubes sound in harmony. Or, for a very loud sound, tie a string to the end and whirl it round. Boys usually play in groups, competing over whose wot sounds sweetest.

History and limits

The wot developed from horns blown to call animals: elephant keepers hollowed a buffalo horn and blew it in rhythm, cupping it with a hand; the lead elephant knew the sound and brought the herd back to the keeper. Take care with the fire when melting lac. Source: Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, Traditional Objects of Everyday Use database, "โหวด", author not named (CC BY 4.0 licence). **Limits** The source gives no length or size for each tube. The illustrations are drawings. There is no product line for raw lac.
