Untanned animal skin (cattle, deer, goat) that has been scraped of flesh and hair but not chemically treated. Extremely tough when dry — shrinks and hardens as it dries, which is exploited for lashing, rawhide mallet heads, drum heads, and shield construction. Must be soaked to become workable again.
