Basswood Sheets and Carving Blocks: Log Sawn, Air-Dried and Planed

Basswood is light, soft and fine-grained, free of knots, and planes, glues and carves easily: the carver's and model-maker's wood. It does not split easily, so saw the log into boards, dry them, then rip thin sheets and cut carving blocks. The picture: our diagram, log to stickered boards to sheets and a block.

Saw into boards

Crosscut the log to length and rip it into boards about 25 mm thick, plus some thick pieces for blocks. Seal the ends.

Air-dry

Stack the boards flat under cover with stickers between every layer and leave them until dry.

Rip and plane sheets

Gauge lines along the edge, rip thin sheets from the dry boards, and plane each to an even thickness.
