Peel-Sieve Potato Masher: Press Through the Net, Leave the Peel

Peeling boiled potatoes before mashing is slow and burns the fingers. Edmund Brown of Burlington, Vermont, received US 78,050, dated 19 May 1868, for a vegetable masher: an inclined net of horizontal bars and upright wires held between two posts, and a smooth presser that swings down and slides on it, "so arranged that the mashed body or pulp of the potato ... will be forced through the meshes or perforations of the frame, while the peels will not pass through the same, but will fall into a dish or pan placed for their reception." This rung works out the net's openings, then prints the net and presser, builds the stand, and mashes potatoes boiled in their skins.

Mashing through a mesh before it

The embedded blueprint presses potatoes through a wire bottom. Brown inclines the net so the peel stays behind and falls clear.
3

Read US 78,050

"A boiled potato is cut half through, and one half of it is placed with the cut surface upon the side a b, while the presser is swung down, as shown by red lines in fig. 2. The presser is then turned up against the sieve, forcing the mealy contents of the potato through the meshes of the sieve, while the peel will remain upon the sieve. The presser is then moved down between the posts B, and carries the peel down, so that the particles of flesh adhering to it may be removed."

Print the net and presser

Print the net of bars and wires in its frame (/uploads/blueprints/peel-sieve-potato-masher-sieve.stl) and the presser with its handle and hooks (/uploads/blueprints/peel-sieve-potato-masher-presser.stl). Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Build the stand

Screw two hardwood posts to a plywood base at about 25° from upright, 140 mm apart. Screw the net between them, and fit a pin across the posts' tops for the presser's hooks.

Mash in the skins

Boil 500 g of potatoes in their skins for about 25 minutes until a knife slides in; drain. Cut each potato half through, lay a half cut side down on the net, swing the presser down and press. Weigh the mash in the bowl below and the peel left behind.

History and honest limits

**Edmund Brown** of Burlington, Vermont, assignor to himself and George G. Wright, received US 78,050, dated 19 May 1868. The frames of bars and wires are removable for cleaning; a wire sieve or perforated plate may serve instead. A follower on the presser clears the net, and the peel drops into a receptacle while the mash falls on an inclined board into another; a plate on the presser keeps mash from sticking. **Honest limits.** A printed net and hardwood posts stand in for his. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Your weights are the result.
