Spiral-Mouth Gatherer Churn: A Slotted Cylinder Swallows the Butter, Geared Dashes Churn Below

Moses Byard of Milan, Indiana, received US 18,384, dated 13 October 1857, for a hollow cylindrical "gatherer" on the churn's shaft, with a spiral mouth in one side and narrow slots round it; a cog wheel on the shaft drives pinions carrying dashes. Turning, the gatherer takes the butter in through its mouth while the buttermilk escapes through the slots. This rung prints the gatherer, head, wheel and pinions, builds the churn and makes butter.

A churn that also gathers, before it

The Cowleses gather by turning both beater sets together; Byard by a slotted cylinder that swallows the butter.

Read US 18,384

"As soon as the butter is churned, it is collected by the revolutions of the 'gatherer' B, into its interior through the spiral opening a; and the buttermilk that is separated from it is allowed to escape through the openings b, b."

Print the parts

Print the gatherer (/uploads/blueprints/spiral-mouth-gatherer-churn-gatherer.stl), its removable head (/uploads/blueprints/spiral-mouth-gatherer-churn-head.stl), the cog wheel (/uploads/blueprints/spiral-mouth-gatherer-churn-cog-wheel.stl) and three pinions (/uploads/blueprints/spiral-mouth-gatherer-churn-pinion.stl). Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Shafts and gatherer

Run a 10 mm square hardwood shaft through a square food-grade container about 220 mm across, the gatherer and its head on it, the cog wheel fixed to the gatherer's end. Below it run three more 10 mm square shafts, each with a pinion meshing the wheel and a hardwood lath fixed along it as the dash.

Churn, then gather

Let the heavy cream stand until it reaches about 15 °C, checked with the thermometer. Pour in 2 litres. Crank steadily; time until the butter comes. Crank on slowly so the gatherer takes the butter in; lift it out and slide off its head to empty it. Pour off the buttermilk, add cold water, churn a little and pour off again until it runs clear; work in a pinch of salt and weigh the butter.

History and honest limits

**Moses Byard** of Milan, Ripley County, Indiana, US 18,384, 13 October 1857, signed 28 July 1857. He made the slots long and narrow, running round the cylinder, "to keep them from being filled or clogged with the butter." He claimed the cylindrical vessel with a spiral mouth and slots. A container and printed parts stand in for his. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn.
