Worm-Drive Hose Clamp: North & Burke, 1945
Edwin W. North and William O. Burke of the National Lock Company, Rockford, Illinois, patented this hose clamp in 1945, US 2,386,629, for hoses carrying compressed air, gasoline and other fluids in aircraft. A band of resilient spring steel is pierced with a row of slanted slots, which a stamping operation can make, set at the angle of the screw thread. A U-shaped saddle is spot welded near one end of the band, and a housing riveted to it holds a screw whose thread runs through the slots. Turning the screw draws the band tight. One clamp fits a wide range of hose sizes.

Saddle
Spot weld the U-shaped saddle, its base curved along the band, near the band's inner end. The band is set up by the base's thickness so the base's curved inner surface continues the band's.

Screw and housing
Lay the screw, with its continuous spiral thread, in the saddle with its reduced ends in the slots of the housing's end walls. Fit the housing over it: the prongs on the saddle's side walls pass through openings in the housing's flanges and are riveted over to fix them together.
