Whirl-Cone Splash-Guard Churn: A Whirl Feeds Air to a Cone, a Funnel Keeps the Cream In

Young set out to mingle "a large quantity of air" with the milk and to stop it "splashing out of the churn without interfering with the free action of the dasher." John Young of West Galway, New York, received US 7,046, dated 22 January 1850, for an atmospheric churn: a geared spindle carrying a flat plate at its foot, an inverted conical vessel open at its top with wings on its rim, inverted channels on the plate leading out from the cone, and a spiral wing up the spindle. A loose inverted funnel on brackets near the top of the tub, with a small disk on the spindle partly closing its hole, returns whatever is thrown up. This rung looks at the whirl, then prints the cone dasher, spiral wing, funnel and disk, fits them in a bucket, and makes butter.

Air thrown out through channels before it

The embedded blueprint draws air down a hollow stem into radial channels. Young lets the cream's whirl bring the air down into an open cone instead.
3

Read US 7,046

"When the churn is supplied with milk and the dasher is rapidly turned by the application of power to the handle of the crank, the whole mass of milk is put in motion and a whirl is created around the spindle, through this whirl the air descends into the conical vessel D, from which it is discharged centrifugally through the channels g, g, and thus mingled with the milk."

Print the parts

Print the cone dasher in one piece: plate, open cone with rim wings, four inverted channels and a spider to the spindle. Print the spiral wing, the splash funnel, which needs a 200 mm bed, the disk and the crank arm. Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Spindle and dasher

Slide the cone dasher, then the spiral wing, onto a 10 mm square hardwood spindle and glue them. Stand the spindle in a seat drilled in the centre of a food-grade bucket's floor.

Funnel, disk and crank

Screw three small wooden brackets inside the bucket 70 mm below the rim and set the funnel loosely on them, point down, the spindle through its hole. Glue the disk on the spindle just above the funnel's hole. Pass the spindle through a plywood lid and glue the crank arm and a dowel handle on top.

Spin and make butter

Let the heavy cream stand until it reaches about 15 °C, checked with the thermometer. Pour in 3 litres. Crank fast enough to raise a whirl round the spindle; time until the butter comes. Lift the funnel out before pouring off the buttermilk. Pour off the buttermilk, add cold water, churn a little and pour off again until it runs clear; work in a pinch of salt and weigh the butter.

History and honest limits

**John Young** of West Galway, Fulton County, New York, received US 7,046, dated 22 January 1850. A pinion on the spindle geared into a wheel on the cover turned by the crank; the cone and channels came off the spindle by buttons or screws for cleaning; filled very full, the wings on the cone's rim kept its mouth open to the air. He claimed the combination of the inverted vessel H and the disk i on the dasher's stem to prevent the cream splashing out at the lid. **Honest limits.** Our crank turns the spindle directly, without his wheel and pinion, so the whirl may be weaker; printed parts and a bucket stand in for his. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Your times and weights are the result.
