Toothed-Disk Potato Masher: Teeth Split It, Holes Take It

A perforated masher only pushes; firm pieces roll away from the holes. George A. Anderson and Charles J. Baker of Albany, New York, received US 108,083, dated 11 October 1870, for a utensil for preparing potatoes and meat: a metal disk with several series of incising teeth and perforations placed alternate, the teeth's width radial; pressed down, "the incisors ... will enter the vegetables and split them at each point in contact, when the broken portions of the vegetables operated upon will rise up and pass through the openings." This rung works out the teeth and open area, then prints the disk, fits a handle, and mashes potatoes.

A perforated disk before it

The embedded blueprint mashes through a perforated disk. Anderson and Baker put teeth between the holes to split the potato first.

Read US 108,083

"We prefer to have the said incisors c to have their width run in the direction of the radii of a circle, as shown in fig. 1, which would strengthen the rim, inclosing the outer series of perforations a with the rim inclosing the inner series of perforations a, and permit the metal of the disk A being made lighter."

Print the disk

Print the disk with its teeth and socket (/uploads/blueprints/toothed-disk-potato-masher-disk.stl) socket down, teeth up. Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Mash firm potatoes

Boil 500 g of potatoes in their skins for about 25 minutes until a knife slides in; drain. Mash half with the toothed disk and time it to no lumps; compare with the yielding-disk masher if you built it.

History and honest limits

**George A. Anderson** and **Charles J. Baker** of Albany, New York, received US 108,083, dated 11 October 1870. Two opposite sides of each perforation depend below the disk as the incisors; any suitable handle may be fixed by a socket, upright or at an angle. They named meat as well as potatoes. **Honest limits.** A printed disk stands in for their metal one. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Your times are the result.
