Extension Spring Wound by Hand with Hooked Ends

An extension spring works in tension: its coils touch at rest and open as it is pulled, and a hook or eye at each end takes the load. Wind spring wire tightly round a rod with every turn touching the last, bend up a hook at each end, and relieve the winding stress with gentle heat. The picture: our diagram of the close-wound body and its hooks.

Instructions

1

Wind the body

Clamp the end of the wire with the rod in the vise. Turn the rod by hand, guiding the wire so each turn lies tight against the last, until the body is long enough (step 5). Wear gloves and glasses: the wire springs.
