Gauze Shaker Egg Beater: Shake the Eggs Through a Wire Gauze

An egg beater with gears and wheels costs money; a cup costs almost nothing. H. F. Drott of Cumberland, Maryland, received US 30,053, dated 18 September 1860, for an egg beater: a gauze-wire partition fixed under the close-fitting top of a tin cup, reaching to about the middle; the eggs are poured in, the top pressed on, and the cup shaken end to end so "violent" that the eggs are forced through the gauze, "which cuts them up at every passage through, until they become exceedingly light." This rung works out how hard a shake is, then prints a gauze insert for a jar and times how fast it froths egg.

2

Forcing egg through a grate before it

The embedded blueprint pumps the eggs through a grate with a piston. Drott drives them through gauze by shaking the whole cup.
3

Read US 30,053

"In using this cup for beating eggs, the eggs are first broken and poured in to the cup A, the top C, is then pressed on tightly as seen in Fig. 1, and a backward and forward endwise motion is given to the cup, the motion being sufficiently violent to force the eggs through the gauze wire which cuts them up at every passage through, until they become exceedingly light. Thirty seconds of violent agitation in this way is amply sufficient in many cases—and in one minute eggs may be made as light by this process as by any other now known."

Print the gauze insert

Print the insert (/uploads/blueprints/gauze-shaker-egg-beater-insert.stl): a ring that sits in a regular-mouth jar under its lid, three legs and a grid of 3.2 mm openings at mid-height. Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls.

Fit it to the jar

Drop the insert into a Mason jar so its ring rests on the jar's rim, the grid hanging to about the middle. Screw the lid down over the ring.

Shake and time

Pour two eggs into the jar, close it, and shake end to end hard. Check at 30 s and at one minute; compare with whisking two eggs by hand.

History and honest limits

**H. F. Drott** of Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, received US 30,053, dated 18 September 1860. The cup is an ordinary tin cup with a handle, a quart being large enough for family use; the gauze is fixed to the top by thin strips of metal, three inches from the top in a cup of that size, reaching about midway. He claimed the gauze partition with the cup and close-fitting cover, the eggs being forced through it. **Honest limits.** FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. A printed grid and a jar stand in for wire gauze and a tin cup. Your times are the result.
