Hydrogen Peroxide 3 %: Barium Peroxide in Dilute Sulphuric Acid
Thénard first made hydrogen peroxide from barium peroxide; the improved way stirs the peroxide into sulphuric acid, which takes the barium out as insoluble barium sulphate. Titrate the clear liquid with permanganate to find its strength, dilute it to 3 %, the mild antiseptic and bleach, and keep it in a dark bottle. Even 3 % hurts the eyes.

Peroxide into cold acid
Grind the barium peroxide to a paste with a little cold water. Stand a beaker of dilute sulphuric acid in ice and stir the paste in a little at a time. Stop while a drop of the liquid still turns blue litmus red: it keeps better slightly acid.

Dissolve 3.161 g of permanganate to 1 litre in a volumetric flask. Pipette 1 mL of the peroxide into a flask with some dilute sulphuric acid and run permanganate in from the burette until the first lasting pink. Note the reading (step 5).
