Isopentane: the 29-30 °C Cut of the Lightest Gasoline (Mabery & Hudson 1897)

Just above the butanes in the lightest gasoline comes a pentane boiling at about 30 °C. Mabery and Hudson collected several hundred grams of the 29-30 °C cut and studied it as isopentane through its chlorine derivative. Result: several hundred grams of a 29-30 °C distillate; its monochloride boiled at 96-97 °C and analysed as C5H11Cl. Source: Mabery & Hudson, Proc. Amer. Acad. 32 (1897), pp. 101-111. The identification as isopentane is theirs. Not given: how many times this cut was redistilled. Extremely flammable and boils near room temperature: no flame near. Picture drawn by Youblob.

Instructions

1

Take the lightest gasoline

Start from the most volatile gasoline: Mabery and Hudson worked 250 litres of 88° and 92° Baumé gasoline from Pennsylvania and Ohio naphtha.

Materials for this step:

GasolineGasoline250 liters

Tools needed:

Glass Distillation FlaskGlass Distillation Flask
2

Distil it in single-degree fractions in the cold

Distil it again and again, collecting single-degree fractions; the most volatile portions went through a Warren condenser filled with a freezing mixture. Ours: crushed ice and salt as the freezing mixture.

3

Keep the 29-30 °C cut

Collect the distillate that comes over at 29 to 30 °C: several hundred grams in their work. They chlorinated it: the monochloride boiled at 96-97 °C at 760 mm and analysed as C5H11Cl.

4

Store it sealed and cool

Ours: it boils near room temperature, so keep it in a stoppered bottle in a cool place, away from flame.
