Khan Lao — a Two-Metre Bamboo Pole with Shark's-Mouth Points for Carrying Many Rice Sheaves at Once

คานหลาว (khan lao) or ไม้คันเหลา (mai khan lao) is pushed through the middle of rice sheaves to carry them on the shoulder, several sheaves at a time. It is made of a straight bamboo about 2 metres long, both ends shaved to slanting points called the "shark's mouth". This blueprint makes a khan lao following the source.

2

Work with rice sheaves before it

The khan lao carries the sheaves to the threshing floor; the threshing sticks beat the grain from them.

Read from the source

"The wood used for the khan lao is straight bamboo; each khan lao is about 2 metres long. The bamboo is dried in the sun or may be heated over a fire; the nodes are shaved smooth with no splinters; then a knife is used to point both ends of the bamboo, which is called the shark's mouth." Make the shark's mouth

How to use

Push the end of the khan lao into the middle of a rice sheaf, at the lower part where the sheaf is tied (kanet khao); push several sheaves onto each end and carry them to the rice pile. Besides rice sheaves it is used to carry seedlings, vetiver, cogon grass and bundles of grass.

History and limits

If made of fully mature bamboo and kept well, safe from borer beetles, it lasts at least 5 years. Farmers seldom use the khan lao now, as threshing machines come to the rice floor in the field.
