PTFE Disc: Sintered in a Molten Nitrate Bath, Cooled Slowly (Brubaker & Hanford 1946)
A PTFE disc pressed cold, then sintered by dipping it in molten salt at 380 °C for half an hour. Instead of being quenched, it cools slowly between magnesite blocks. The patent says slowly cooled pieces are a little softer and less stiff, which is often better for machining.
Source: M. M. Brubaker and W. E. Hanford (du Pont), US 2,400,099 (1946), Example II. The patent gives no nitrate-to-nitrite ratio. The mould, press, pot and burner are ours. Picture drawn by Youblob.

Press a disc at 500 psi
At 25 °C, press PTFE powder at 500 lb/sq in into a disc 2 in across and ⅜ in thick.
Materials for this step:
PTFE Resin Powder1 as required for the discTools needed:
Compression Mould
Hydraulic Press

Melt the salt bath at 380 °C
Melt the salt bath at 380 °C
Melt a mixture of sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite and hold it at 380 °C. The patent gives no ratio. Ours: a cast iron pot on a gas burner.
Tools needed:
Chile Saltpetre (Sodium Nitrate)
Sodium Nitrite
Cast Iron Pot
Gas Burner
