Sliding-Board Lever Dash Churn: A Free Board Between Two Fixed Ones, a Lever With a Spring

Albert Pease of Weston, Vermont, received US 15,741, dated 16 September 1856, for working an ordinary upright dash churn with a lever on a frame, helped by a spring, and for a dasher with a board sliding freely between two fixed ones, "driven with considerable force alternately against the fixed boards." This rung prints the three boards and the cover cup, builds the frame and lever, and makes butter.

A dasher that strikes itself before it

Burnham and Hibbard strike two frames; Pease drives a free board between two fixed ones.

Read US 15,741

"Between these two fixed boards I add a third disk, or board, d, which is allowed to slide up and down freely on the handle, between said fixed boards. Thus by the resistance of the cream, this movable board will be driven with considerable force alternately against the fixed boards, and occasion a greatly increased agitation of the cream."

Print the parts

Print the lower board (/uploads/blueprints/sliding-board-lever-dash-churn-lower-board.stl), the upper board (/uploads/blueprints/sliding-board-lever-dash-churn-upper-board.stl), the sliding board with its loose square bore (/uploads/blueprints/sliding-board-lever-dash-churn-sliding-board.stl) and the cover with its cup (/uploads/blueprints/sliding-board-lever-dash-churn-cover-cup.stl). Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Frame, lever and spring

Stand a tapered food-grade bucket on a pine base. Fix a pine standard at one side as the fulcrum and pivot a pine lever on it; pin the dash handle to the lever above the bucket. On the other side stand a steel rod through the lever's end with a compression spring under it.

Churn

Let the heavy cream stand until it reaches about 15 °C, checked with the thermometer. Pour in 2 litres and fit the cover. Work the lever steadily; time until the butter comes. Pour off the buttermilk, add cold water, churn a little and pour off again until it runs clear; work in a pinch of salt and weigh the butter.

History and honest limits

**Albert Pease** of Weston, Windsor County, Vermont, US 15,741, 16 September 1856, signed 28 June 1856. He offered two linked sliding boards or cross slats as alternatives, and a treadle for the foot. He claimed the two fixed boards with a sliding board between them. A bucket, pine and printed parts stand in for his. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn.
