The Humped Crochet Needle: A Raised Neck That Sizes Every Loop
With a plain round hook, how big each loop comes out depends on the hand, so uneven work is the beginner's first problem.
Ingeborg Marie Jensen of Chicago, Illinois, received US 1,303,327, patented 13 May 1919, for a crochet needle with a flattened body, a flattened hook turned at right angles to it, and between them a high "hump" slightly larger in section than the body, designed "to open up the loop to the proper extent to draw the thread back through it as the hook reaches after the thread."
This rung compares the loop sizes of hump, body and a round hook, then carves the needle from hardwood and measures how even its stitches are.

"It will be noted that the maximum cross-sectional area of the connecting part c, as seen in Fig. 5, is slightly greater than that of the body a, as seen in Fig. 6, and this is important, as it enables me to accumulate loops on the body portion, as is desirable in some forms of crocheting, without their being so tight on the body portion a as to bind, so that they can be readily moved thereon."
"By use of my novel design of crochet needle or hook, I find that it can be worked much more easily and does more even and uniform work with less skill on the part of the operator than any needles that have been used prior to mine."

Cut 180 mm of 10 mm hardwood dowel. Leaving 35 mm at one end round, file two opposite flats along the rest until it is 5 mm thick, then narrow it to 9 mm wide. Round the corners.

In the round end, carve the hump 15 mm from the body: 6 mm wide and 8.5 mm high, its high side at right angles to the body's flats. Taper it down 15 mm to a neck 4 mm high and 3 mm thick.

History and honest limits
History and honest limits
**Ingeborg Marie Jensen** of Chicago, Illinois, filed US 1,303,327 on 16 July 1917; it was patented 13 May 1919. The body is substantially rectangular in section with rounded corners; a hook may be placed at each end, preferably reversed; and where the needle is small, she used a holder on the flattened body. The length of the rising part behind the hook matters relative to the needle's size, so the loop opens fully "without any waste or excess movement of the needle."
**Honest limits.** She gives no sizes; ours make a large hardwood hook. The notebook treats each loop as tight round the section. Your stitch widths are the result.
