Hand-Rolled Egg Beater: Rub Two Rolls Between the Palms

Two agitators turning opposite ways had needed a crank and a fixture. David Shive of Philadelphia received US 36,030, dated 29 July 1862, for a muddler or egg beater worked by "a pair of slender cylinders or rolls arranged parallel with each other in a suitable frame": rubbed between the hands, one roll turns the inner agitator and the other, through a pair of pinions, the outer one, opposite ways — "thus dispensing with the cumbrous fixtures and crank heretofore required." This rung works out the turns per rub, then prints the rolls and pinions, builds the frame and agitators, and times a beating.

Two opposite agitators by hand before it

The embedded blueprint turns two beaters opposite ways with a vibrated rack. Shive does it by rubbing two rolls between the palms.

Read US 36,030

"In the operation of this improved implement, it will be evident that if it be held by its cylinders B B' between one's hands, and an alternately backward and forward motion given to the latter, corresponding rotary motions will be given to the said cylinders, and alternating rotary motions in opposite directions to each other will be given to the agitators C and D."

Print the rolls and pinions

Print two rolls (/uploads/blueprints/hand-rolled-egg-beater-roll.stl) and two 10-tooth pinions of module 1.5 (/uploads/blueprints/hand-rolled-egg-beater-pinion.stl). Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls.

Bend the frame

Cut 160 mm of 25 × 3 mm flat bar, narrow it to 10 mm, and bend both ends at right angles to make a frame 122 mm between ends. Drill each end twice, 15 mm apart, for the rolls' axles.

Axles and agitators

Run a 3 mm wire axle through each roll and the frame. Fix the first roll's axle on through the frame as the inner agitator's stem; slide a tube over it for the outer agitator with a pinion on top, meshing the pinion on the second roll's axle. Bend stainless loops onto each: inner 18 mm, outer 32 mm across.

History and honest limits

**David Shive** of Philadelphia received US 36,030, dated 29 July 1862. His frame is a flattened strip of metal bent at right angles at each end; the rolls are hard wood, about three-eighths of an inch across and four inches long. Roll B, stem E and frame may be fixed together so only the outer agitator turns, but he found both turning more effective, at no extra cost. He named mixing beverages in hotels as well as family use. **Honest limits.** FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Printed rolls and module-1.5 pinions stand in for his wood and metal. Your times are the result.
